3 Tips for an Enjoyable Riding Experience

Top 3 tips for an enjoyable horse riding experience

A horse riding experience is an exciting one, whether it be horse riding lessons, a trail ride, or a beach ride.

The important thing you need to remind yourself is that a horse is a 500 kilo+, living, breathing creature with a mind of its own and a mind that we can’t always read.

So here are our top 3 tips to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe horse riding experience.

Tip one – remain relaxed and calm at all times

Did you know that horses are incredibly intuitive and can sense when a rider is scared, in a bad mood or just off in general?

Yep, it’s true so this is the most important tip of all – remain calm and relaxed around a horse AND on a horse.

Yes, we hear you, sometimes remaining calm is much easier said than done, we get it!

Imagine if during a trail ride your horse or another horse was spooked, what’s going to be your most natural reaction?

To get a fright and let out a yell or a scream? Most likely but it’s a big no no!

Why? Because it’s a sure way to further spook a horse.

But don’t let it turn you off because a reputable horse-riding centre will have horses suitable to cater for all levels of riding with the horses usually chosen for their good on-ground, on-trails temperament.

This means they’re not horses who have tendencies to misbehave or that will easily spook. It can still happen which is why approaching any horse ride with a relaxed and calm state of mind is best.

And the best way to remain calm and relaxed? Simply breathe…

Tip two – wear comfortable clothing

Long pants like jeans are preferable as they will protect your legs from rubbing on the saddle. Depending on the weather, a comfortable, fitted top/shirt is ideal.

Avoid wearing anything that jingles e.g. jewellery, or items of clothing that will flap around in the wind. It will be a distraction for the horse.

Comfortable shoes like runners without a high tread/grip are recommended. Or better still, if you have horse riding boots with a flat smooth sole, ideal!

Tip three – listen to your tour guide

It doesn’t matter what your horse-riding ability is, it’s super important that you listen to instructions and if you’re not clear on anything, ask a question.

Your safety, the safety of others and the safety of your horse is paramount so if there’s anything you’re uncertain about, ask for clarification.

So that’s it, the top 3 tips for an enjoyable horse-riding experience.
